Tetsubin are cast iron teapots made in Japan (Iwachu, Tetsugi and Oiharu companies) and often used in a tea ceremony. Often they are meticulously decorated with raised patterns on the outside and enamelled on the inside. Their small size and often unusual shape make them popular with collectors. A typical Tetsubin can hold around 5 liters of water. It contains a tea filter and is often accompanied by a decorated trivet of a similar design. The Tetsubin dates back to the 17th century and was originally used as a kettle. Today they are no longer placed on the hearth, but are used only to infuse tea, keep it warm and serve it.
