The Seven Gods of Happiness are parts of Japan's most famous deities. Their particularity and strength are found in their religious origins: Shintoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism. Their representation is found in many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. The 7 deities are often represented in their ship, the Takarabune (the treasure ship) in which they arrive on the last day of the year to bring their treasures. Traditionally, this is why, on New Year's Eve, children are often given money, in a red envelope illustrated with a boat, to children. But who are they? - Ebisu: god of fishermen, merchants, work and prosperity. -Daikokuten: god of wealth and prosperity, home and cooking - Bishamonten: chief of the four guardians of Buddha, guardian of the North, warrior god who denied the guilty. - Jurojin: incarnation of the southern pole star and god of longevity - Hoti: also known as the laughing Buddha, god of prosperity, plenitude and contentment - Kukurokuju: god of longevity and wisdom - Benzaiten: goddess of the arts, eloquence and knowledge and also of water and sea
